Most children don’t enjoy doing housework. They like playing computer games better than cleaning the rooms. But in Australia, Jim and Robert’s mother, Mrs. Black, has good and fun ways to get their children to do housework.

Here is an example.

“Mom, have you worked out next week’s housework? Let Jim and me choose the cards. I can’t wait. It’s fun!”

When Robert shouted out, his mother had already put all the cards on their big table. On the cards, there are some words like these, “Sweep the floor, clean your bedroom, help Mom cook, wash vegetables, make the bed, feed the fish, clean the bathroom” and many others. Jim and Robert chose two cards for each day from Monday to Friday. Then they would hang them on the weekday task (任务) board. Jim likes to clean the bathroom, so he picked up the card “clean the bathroom”. Robert loves to make the bed so he picked up his favorite card. Jim again picked up “wash vegetables” and Robert chose “feed the fish”. Soon the two boys were happy to take away all the cards.

To help the children do housework, their mother thought hard and came up with this idea. Of course, the parents did the housework on weekends and left Jim and Robert two days free.

Family Arguments

I have a brother. We love each other but we sometimes argue. Once, my brother played loud music in his bedroom until late at night. It was so loud that I couldn’t get to sleep. I ran to his room angrily and tried to stop the music player. However, it dropped to the floor and broke. Both my brother and I were upset.

A few days later, I bought a new music player for my brother. I had a talk with him and explained why I was angry. He was sorry.

Family arguments are common. When we share ideas different from other family members, we should take time to listen to each other so that we can understand each other and communicate better.

An Unforgettable Experience

I had a very unforgettable experience when I was 11 years old.

We went to a village to join a camp. We needed to make lunch by ourselves. Some of my classmates were washing vegetables while I was cutting the meat just like others. I felt kind of bored. Unluckily, I hurt my fingers when I was cutting the last piece. When Joey knew about that, she walked to me. It made me feel warm when she was putting the bandage on my finger.

I learned a lot from this experience. We should learn to do housework and take care of ourselves. Also, we should be ready to help others and pass down kindness.

The Thirsty Crow

I would like to tell you one of my favorite stories. My father told it to me. It’s about a crow.

One day, a crow was looking for water everywhere. Suddenly, he saw a bottle with some water in it. But there was so little that he couldn’t reach it. He looked around, and then he had an idea. He picked up the small stones nearby one by one and put them into the bottle. The water in the bottle then rose up. Finally, the crow was able to drink the water.

I like this story because it tells us that we should never give up when we have trouble.

Pandas are loved by people around the world. Panda is one of China’s symbols. In February 2023, pandas including Xiang Xiang and Yong Ming came back home. Before this, they were lent to Japan.

Since the early 1980s, China has stopped giving away pandas as gifts because of their falling numbers. In the 1990s, China started lending pandas to other countries. The pandas will stay in those countries for 10 years. Today about 60 pandas are living outside China.

How do those zoos make sure they have what the pandas need to be comfortable?Wei Rongping, the head of a panda base in Sichuan, told us that those zoos need to meet several conditions. For example, there must be a healthy and safe environment. Take a zoo in the Netherlands as an example. In 2017, to welcome pandas Xing Ya and Wu Wen, the zoo built a panda house named Pandasia. It offers a clinic (诊所), a cold room to keep bamboo and a room for them to be ready to have babies.

Also, a panda may eat 12 to 38 kilograms of bamboo in a day. The zoo must give pandas enough food. Pandas Si Hai and Jing Jing traveled to a park in Qatar in 2022. Every week, the park buys 1,000 kilograms of fresh bamboo from their hometown, Sichuan.

In my opinion, we can’t cut down trees and we should build more nature parks for them. What’s more, we can’t buy things made from these animals. Animals are our friends. Let’s protect them together!

Earlier this month, I took part in a flute competition. I would be able to join the school music group if I did well enough. I worked hard to prepare for it.

On the big day, I was a little nervous. When it was my turn, I took a deep breath. As the beautiful music came out of my flute, I felt confident (自信的). My teachers smiled at me as I played. In the end, I was the only student to win in Grade 7.

Music and I

Music plays an important role in our life. Of all kinds of music, I like country music best.

Once I didn’t pass my math test, I felt unhappy and didn’t talk to anyone because I thought no one could understand me. One of my classmates invited me to go to her house and then played some songs by a country music singer. The music was so slow that it made me feel relaxed. From one of those songs, I also learned that we should be brave in the face of difficulty.

When you are sad or tired, why not try to listen to some music? It will surely help you relax and feel much better.

Now, there is more and more rubbish on the earth. Many people enjoy doing shopping so much that they buy lots of clothes. However, they choose to throw those clothes away once they don’t like those clothes.

Here are three ways to make good use of the old clothes. The first is to sell them at yard sales. The second way is to give them away to other people in need. The third way is to make new clothes from old ones. Then, fewer old clothes will become rubbish.

All in all, we should play a part in cutting down rubbish in our neighborhood. When you go shopping next time, check out the clothes you have and make sure to buy what you really need.

How do you feel about nature (自然)? After spending hours inside a building, do you feel better when you visit parks? Most people think that nature is good for our physical health and mind. ▲ And in countries such as the USA, only 10% of teenagers spend time outside every day. Many doctors feel that this is a problem.

As a result, some doctors are studying the connection (联系) between nature and health. One example of this is the work of Dr. Matilda in Sweden. The doctor gave people a math test. During the test, their heart rates (心率) were fast. After the test, one group of people sat in a 3D-virtual-reality (虚拟现实) room for fifteen minutes with pictures and sounds of nature. Their heart rates were slower than those people’s in the other group.

The virtual touch with nature helped them feel more relaxed. The natural world allows our mind to rest and slow down, and can trigger good feelings and help people find peace. Another good example of how nature is good for health comes from Canada. In Toronto, researchers studied 31,000 people living in the city. They found that healthier people lived near parks.

Because of studies like these, some countries and cities want nature to be part of people’s everyday life. In Dubai, for example, there are plans for a new shopping center with a large garden so people can relax outside with trees, plants and water. In Switzerland, “forest schools” are popular. School children study their subjects in the forests and do lots of exercise outside.

In a word, nature makes us grow stronger. Let’s spend more time finding fun in nature.

When someone shouts at you or says something that can hurt you, how will you feel and what will you do?

Sixteen years ago, I learned an important life lesson in the back of a New York City taxi. One day, I called a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane (车道) when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space (停车场) right in front of us. My driver quickly stopped his car and missed the other car by just inches (英寸)! The driver of the other car turned his head around and started shouting at us! My driver just smiled at that driver. I couldn’t understand. So I asked, “Why did you just do that? That driver almost hit your car and sent us to the hospital!”

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks (垃圾车). They run around full of garbage-all kinds of bad feelings. As their garbage adds up, they need a place to pour it away and sometimes they’ll pour it on you. Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their garbage and carry it to other people at work, at home, or on the street.

Since then I have started to see garbage trucks everywhere. I see the load (负载) they’re carrying. I see them coming to drop it off. And like my taxi driver, I don’t make it a personal thing. I just smile, wish them well, and move on.

Not to Be Garbage Trucks

Now, many people have bad feelings and often get angry with their parents, friends or even themselves. They are not happy with everything and everyone.

Here are two reasons. On the one hand, people now are under great pressure and they don’t have a good way to let out their bad feelings. On the other hand, people care too many things and make themselves tired. So in order to set up a friendly world, people should spend time relaxing themselves. Also, it’s easier to solve problems by talking to others.

Don’t be one of the garbage trucks and just take everything easy!

Humans share the earth with many different kinds of wildlife. However, many of our animal friends may not be around for much longer.

According to the LivingPlanetReport2020 by World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) in October, populations of several animals, including mammals (哺乳动物), birds and fish, had fallen to sixty-eight percent since 1970.

According to the report, one of the biggest reasons of wildlife loss is human activities. They affect three quarters of the world’s land. Many forests have been cut down to make farmland. About 300 kinds of mammals are dying out because humans are over-eating them. Another example is the over-fishing of the oceans, theGuardian showed.

The Chinese paddlefish (白鲟) was one of the world’s largest freshwater (淡水的) fishes. It could grow to 7.5 meters. The fish has a big nose so it is also called “elephant fish”. The Chinese paddlefish was an ancient fish. It first appeared in the Jurassic period (侏罗纪时期). However, scientists from China said recently that the Chinese paddlefish had died out.

“The challenge we face is to find ways to meet the needs of our growing population while protecting the environment,” the WWF said. It has called on world governments and businesses to work together to protect people and nature.

To protect endangered animals, there are following things we can do. For example, we shouldn’t use things made of whale parts. We should all play a part in taking care of the beautiful earth and live in peace with the lovely animals.

六、 读写综合 (本大题共20分。)

A. 回答问题 (本题共5小题, 每小题2分, 共10分。)

I am Jack. One place that is really important in my life is my grandmother’s house. She lives in a small village in the south. I go to visit my grandmother every summer. I can get away from the city and relax. The village is just a group of white houses on a hillside (山坡) with some small shops. But it’s really peaceful.

One reason why I like the village is that it’s a beautiful place. My grandmother has a lovely garden and we can sit under the trees, drinking sweet tea and talking. It’s so comfortable. But the main reason why this place is so important to me is my grandmother herself. She is so kind to me, and wonderful to talk to. Also, she’s a great cook and the meals she prepares are simple, but so fresh and delicious. And she’s always giving me snacks during the day, so I always return home feeling cool and refreshed (神清气爽的)!

I really love visiting my grandmother for the holidays. I think that I probably couldn’t live somewhere like that all the time. It would be hard to live in a small village where everybody knows each other. I’d like to live in a busy and exciting place. But I think this small village is the best place for me to take a break and stay with my grandmother.

51. When does Jack go to visit his grandmother?

52. What is on the hillside in the village?

Living in the Village or in the City

In my opinion, life in the village is completely different from that in the city.

The air in the village is so fresh that it’s good for health to live there. However, the life there is boring because there are few activities for fun. As for living in a city, it is interesting because there are many fun places for us to hang out with our friends. But the life in a city is really busy and I have to spend lots of money when living there.

To me, I will choose to live in a city. On the one hand, my family and friends are all in the city so I will not be lonely. On the other hand, the more pressure, the more I can learn.
